Street Project 2026: Bringing Care to the Streets of Pattiveeranpatti

Not everyone can come to us for help, so we go to them. Street Project 2026 took essentials and a little kindness directly to elderly and homeless people on the streets around Pattiveeranpatti.

Some of the people who need help the most are the ones least able to ask for it. Elderly men and women living alone, daily-wage workers without a roof, people who spend their days by the roadside: they rarely walk into an office or fill out a form. That is why Street Project 2026 exists. Helping homeless and vulnerable people, for us, means going out and meeting them exactly where they are.

Meeting people where they are

Our volunteers set out on the roads around Pattiveeranpatti in an auto-rickshaw loaded with essentials. Stop by stop, they looked for those who needed support the most: elderly grandfathers resting under trees, women waiting by the roadside, workers sitting outside closed shops.

There were no stages, no banners and no speeches, just one person reaching out to another, offering what was needed and taking a moment to talk.

Essentials that make a real difference

The support we carried was simple but meaningful. Volunteers handed out packed bags with daily essentials and drinking water, along with clothing such as lungis and veshtis for elderly men who had very little to wear.

For someone who spends the whole day outdoors in the Tamil Nadu heat, a bottle of clean water or a fresh piece of clothing is not a small thing. It is comfort, and it is respect.

Dignity in every handshake

What stood out most in this year’s Street Project was not what was given, but how. Our volunteers took time with each person: greeting them warmly, listening, and handing things over with both hands and a smile. Many of the people we met were elderly, and several told us that it had been a long time since anyone stopped to speak with them.

Helping homeless and elderly people is not charity from above. It is neighbours looking after neighbours.

Why street outreach matters

Street Project is part of IFAMS Educational Trust’s wider commitment to social service and humanitarian support. Outreach like this helps us:

  • Reach people who fall outside formal welfare systems
  • Respond quickly to immediate needs like food, water and clothing
  • Understand the real challenges faced by the most vulnerable in our community
  • Build trust, so people know where to turn when they need help again

Street Project 2026 builds on the work we began in 2025, and we are committed to continuing it year after year. You can learn more about our wider work on our Areas of Service page.

Walk with us

Every bag of essentials and every bottle of water on that auto-rickshaw was made possible by supporters who believe no one should be forgotten. If you would like to help us reach more people on the streets, you can support Street Project with a donation or join us as a volunteer on our next outreach day.
