Stitching a Brighter Future: Inside Our Tailoring Training Program for Women

A classroom full of women, a row of sewing machines and a trainer ready to teach: our Tailoring Training Program 2025 is helping women in our community turn a skill into a livelihood.

Walk into the IFAMS Training Division on a class day and you will find a room full of energy. Rows of women sit attentively, notebooks ready, while a trainer stands beside the sewing machines and explains the next technique. This is our tailoring training program, and for many of the women in that room it is the first step towards earning an income of their own.

A classroom built for real skills

Our Tailoring Training Program 2025 was designed around one idea: practical skills that can be used from day one. The training room is set up like a working tailoring unit, with sewing machines, fabric and materials on the shelves, and plenty of space for hands-on practice.

Participants learn the fundamentals step by step: taking measurements, cutting patterns, operating the machine safely, and stitching garments from start to finish.

Learning from experience

Every session combines demonstration with practice. The trainer shows a technique, explains the common mistakes to avoid, and then the women try it themselves with guidance at every stage. Questions are always welcome, and learners support one another, often helping a neighbour who is still mastering a tricky stitch.

More than a skill: confidence and independence

For many participants, joining a class is a big step. Some are homemakers who have never had the chance to learn a trade; others are young women looking for a way to contribute to their family’s income. Tailoring training gives them something valuable: a skill they own, that can be practised from home, and that is always in demand.

When a woman learns a skill, she does not just earn for herself. She lifts her whole family with her.

With tailoring skills, women can:

  • Stitch clothes for their own families and save money
  • Take orders from neighbours and start a small home business
  • Find work with local tailoring shops and garment units
  • Build confidence, independence and a stronger voice at home

Part of a bigger mission

The tailoring program is one of several courses offered by the IFAMS Training Division, alongside Aari and embroidery training and other skill development workshops. Together, these programs reflect our belief that empowering women is one of the most effective ways to strengthen an entire community.

Help us train the next batch

Every new batch needs machines, materials and trainers, and every woman who completes the course carries those benefits into her home and community. If you would like to help more women learn a skill and build a livelihood, please consider supporting our training programs. If you know a woman who would benefit from joining, get in touch with us to find out about upcoming batches.
